
Jos, Nigeria – The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), Dr. Pokop W. Bupwatda, has inaugurated the Committee on Comprehensive Emergency Obstetrics and Newborn Care (CEMONC) under the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA). This initiative, spearheaded by the Minister of Health, Dr. Ali Pate, aims to enhance maternal and newborn healthcare services within JUTH.
The committee comprises key professionals from various medical and administrative departments, ensuring a multidisciplinary approach to emergency obstetrics and neonatal care. The members of the committee are as follows:
• Prof. I. Shambe – HOD Obstetrics & Gynaecology (Chairman)
• Mrs. Alice Markus – In-Charge, Labour Ward
• Mr. Joseph Izang – Representative, Health Records
• Ejura Musa – Representative, Medical Social Work
• Mrs. Nadasule Agnes – Representative, Health Records & Pharmacy
• Adamu Ebuga – Representative, Accounts
• Nr. Rose Anakwe – JUTH NHIA Nurse
• DCS&T Austin Davou – Secretary
The inauguration marks a significant step in strengthening emergency obstetric services, reducing maternal and neonatal mortality, and improving access to quality healthcare for pregnant women and newborns in Plateau State and beyond.
Dr. Bupwatda emphasized the importance of teamwork and commitment in achieving the objectives of the CEMONC initiative. He encouraged the committee members to work diligently in ensuring that the initiative meets its intended goals of providing prompt, efficient, and accessible maternal and newborn care under NHIA coverage.
The newly inaugurated committee is expected to begin operations immediately, implementing strategies to enhance emergency obstetrics services within JUTH.
