CHEMICAL PATHOLOGY DEPARTMENT AT JUTH ADVANCES DIAGNOSTIC SERVICES AND STRENGTHENS PATIENT CARE

The Chemical Pathology Department of Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) has made remarkable progress in enhancing diagnostic accuracy, service delivery, and support for clinical care. According to Dr. Lucious Imoh, recent upgrades including the acquisition of state-of-the-art chemistry analyzers have expanded the range of tests available, improved accuracy, and boosted the department’s role in advanced cancer and metabolic disease diagnosis.
The department has also enrolled in external quality assurance (EQA) programs with the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (RCPA) and receives mentorship from the Federal Ministry of Health as part of its drive toward international accreditation. With more consultants on board, expanded emergency coverage, and stronger collaborations with other clinical units, Chemical Pathology is playing a vital role in patient management across specialties.

Q. What recent advancements or upgrades in the Chemical Pathology lab have enhanced diagnostic accuracy and service delivery at JUTH?
A. Thanks to management for providing equipment like the state of act chemistry for more expanded tests ,more accuracy, and more advanced cancer scans testing etc.
Q. How has the department improved turnaround time for test results, and what impact has this had on patient care?
A. Also help in other specialty areas such as nutritious endocrinology and other aspects.
Q. Can you share any successful quality control or accreditation milestones that the lab has achieved recently?
A. Also increased coverage emagency services and more sites, casualties and more doors for emergency cases. More consultants have been employed in the department to provide better services and making comments in the results to advise Patients. Service delivery is now numerous and provided in more areas ,for code cases to have the ability to concentrate and supply of reagents for turnaround time when necessary.
The department recently has enrolled in external quality assurance (EQA program) with the royal college of pathology of Australia RCPA. Futher more the department has enrolled with the mentorship provided with the organisation and also with the federal ministry of health providing mentorship towards achieving accreditation.
Q. In what ways has the department supported other clinical units at JUTH through timely and reliable biochemical investigations?
A. Providing timely, accurate and reliable laboratory services to support clinical research and decisions.Also where necessary, the department professors are notified in case of critical results .
Q. How do you ensure continuous staff development and training to maintain excellence in service delivery?
A. Weekly academics meetings are held to discuss on current updates in different parts of the Laboratory.
Also involved in research work both within the department and in collaboration with other departments.
The international research and mentorship programme is also included, In-service training programs also help.
Q. What future initiatives or innovations is the department planning to further strengthen laboratory services at JUTH?
A. Intended provision for special diagnostic services by expanding our tests to cover areas like toxicology , obesity, special splid testing,also helping to commence metabolic clinical for the provision of cardio metabolic condition.
