In a significant act of generosity, Dr. Okah, a renowned consultant currently based in the UK, has made a substantial donation to the Jos University Teaching Hospital’s Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Unit. Dr. Okah, who trained and is still training many of the hospital’s surgeons before relocating to the UK, continues to support his former institution with both expertise and resources.
Dr. Okah’s recent donation includes essential equipment for reconstructive microsurgery, which is particularly for breast reconstruction for cancer survivors. His contributions have enabled the hospital to perform intricate surgeries, including the use of abdominal tissue to create new breasts for patients who have undergone mastectomies. This dual-benefit procedure also offers patients a tummy tuck.
Since the program’s inception, five successful breast reconstruction surgeries have been conducted, with each operation requiring meticulous planning and approximately ten hours to complete. Despite challenges such as financial constraints and logistical issues, the hospital has made remarkable strides in this field, thanks to Dr. Okah’s unwavering support.
Dr. Okah’s latest donation includes a Zimmer Dermatome, worth approximately $7,000. This equipment is essential for the hospital’s operations, particularly for the plastic surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedics, and maxillofacial department. Dr. Okah has also pledged to bring additional necessary equipments, further enhancing the hospital’s capabilities.
The hospital’s management team, led by Dr. Pokop W. Bupwatda, expressed profound gratitude for Dr. Okah’s surgery team led by Prof. Yiltok for the continued support. He highlighted the importance of such donations in improving patient care and training local medical staff in advanced surgical techniques. This collaboration not only advances clinical services but also fosters skill development among the hospital’s surgeons.
Dr. Okah’s dedication serves as an inspiring example for other expatriates to contribute to the development of healthcare services in their home countries. His ongoing commitment to the Jos University Teaching Hospital ensures that patients receive world-class care and that the next generation of surgeons is well-equipped to continue this vital work.
The hospital looks forward to future visits from Dr. Okah and hopes to sustain this beneficial partnership, ultimately enhancing the quality of healthcare provided to the community.
