WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY: PRIORITISING MENTAL HEALTH IN THE WORKPLACE

In an inspiring celebration of World Mental Health Day, the Department of Psychiatry, in collaboration with Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), organized a series of events emphasizing the theme, “It is Time to Prioritize Mental Health at the Workplace.” The day commenced with a vibrant road walk from Secretariat Junction to the State Ministry of Health in Jos, drawing attention to the crucial need for mental health awareness in professional settings.
The Head of Department, Dr. Charles Nwoga opened with a goodwill remark, encouraging participants to speak about their mental health as it is a very important part of life and there is “no health without a mental health”. The event saw the esteemed presence of the Honourable Commissioner of Health, Dr. Shurkuk Cletus Bako, representing the Executive Governor of Plateau State, Barrister Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang. Also in attendance were Dr. Bunar Masok, Director of Public Health, along with other directors from the State Ministry of Health.
Participants carried banners and chanted slogans advocating for mental health support in workplaces, underscoring the importance of creating environments where mental well-being is a priority. Goodwill messages were presented by various dignitaries, emphasizing the collective responsibility of both employers and employees in fostering mental health.
Dr. Bako, in his address, highlighted the government’s commitment to integrating mental health services within workplace policies, ensuring that every employee has access to the support they need. Dr. Masok and other directors echoed these sentiments, calling for actionable steps to reduce workplace stress and promote a culture of mental wellness.
The event marked a significant step towards raising awareness and encouraging proactive measures to prioritize mental health in workplaces across Plateau State.
