JUTH Marks World Hand Hygiene Day with Awareness Activities and Inauguration of Infection Control Unit Nurses

The Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) today joined the global community to commemorate World Hand Hygiene Day, an annual event aimed at promoting best practices in hand hygiene and infection prevention.
The event, held at the hospital’s seminar hall, was graced by Professor Asabe Chungdung Miner, who represented the Chief Medical Director, Dr. Pokop W. Bupwatda and the hospital management. In her address, Prof. Miner emphasized the critical role of hand hygiene in curbing the spread of infectious diseases, especially in healthcare settings. She commended the Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) team for their dedication and urged all staff to remain committed to global standards in patient safety.
A highlight of the celebration was the inauguration of the Infection Control Unit Nurses, a dedicated team tasked with ensuring strict adherence to hygiene protocols across various departments in the hospital.
Following the seminar, outreach activities extended to clinic areas where lectures and practical demonstrations on proper hand hygiene techniques were conducted for both staff and patients. The sessions aimed to raise awareness on the “clean care is safer care” message and the importance of hand hygiene as a simple yet powerful tool to save lives.
World Hand Hygiene Day is observed every 5th of May under the auspices of the World Health Organization (WHO), with this year’s theme reinforcing the need for institutional leadership and staff engagement in hygiene practices.
JUTH’s celebration underscores the hospital’s continued commitment to improving healthcare delivery through infection control and staff education.
