RHEUMATOLOGY TAKES CENTRE STAGE AS NSR 2026 CONFERENCE HOLDS IN JOS
The Nigerian Society of Rheumatology (NSR) has commenced its 2026 Annual Scientific Conference and General Congress in Jos, Plateau State, bringing together academics, researchers, healthcare professionals, development partners and other stakeholders to deliberate on the future of rheumatology care in Nigeria.
The conference, themed “From Margins to Mainstream: Transforming Rheumatology Care, Education and Research in Nigeria,” provides a platform for participants to share knowledge, exchange ideas and explore practical approaches to improving the prevention, diagnosis and management of rheumatological conditions in the country.
The Chief Host of the occasion and Chief Medical Director of Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), Dr. Pokop Wushipba Bupwatda, who was represented by the Deputy Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (DCMAC), Clinical Services, Dr. Nankling Lamu, formally declared the conference open.
In his address, Dr. Bupwatda welcomed members of the Nigerian Society of Rheumatology, academics, researchers, participants and other stakeholders to Jos, describing the gathering as an important opportunity to strengthen collaboration and advance rheumatology practice in Nigeria.
He commended the participants for making the journey to Jos to attend the conference, noting that their commitment demonstrated a shared determination to improve the quality and accessibility of rheumatology services in the country.
The JUTH Chief Medical Director called on stakeholders to intensify research aimed at identifying and addressing the barriers that prevent patients from accessing appropriate rheumatology care. He also encouraged greater collaboration with development partners to mobilise resources and support initiatives capable of improving rheumatology services.
Dr. Bupwatda further stressed the need to move beyond awareness creation to practical action, urging stakeholders to translate knowledge and research findings into interventions that can make a meaningful difference in the lives of patients.
He described the theme of the conference as timely and highly relevant, particularly given the need to bring rheumatology more firmly into mainstream healthcare, education and research in Nigeria.
The conference features scientific presentations, research discussions, professional exchanges and deliberations on strategies for strengthening rheumatology care, education and research across the country.
The gathering also provides an opportunity for participants to build professional networks, share experiences and develop collaborative approaches towards addressing the challenges confronting rheumatology practice in Nigeria.
