
The Department of Family Medicine at Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) commemorated World Family Doctors’ Day with an enlightening event held at the General Outpatient Department (GOPD). The occasion, themed “Building Mental Resilience in a Changing World,” emphasized the crucial role of family physicians in promoting mental well-being amid global challenges.
The event was chaired by Prof. Mark Gyang, Head of the Family Medicine Department, who highlighted the importance of family doctors in providing comprehensive and continuous healthcare. Also in attendance were Nurse Umar, Head of the Nursing Department, and Dr. Titus Dajel, the head of National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), who underscored the need for accessible mental health services and the challenges faced by the insurance authorities.
The keynote lecture was delivered by Dr. Raphael Ojoh, who explored strategies for enhancing mental resilience in individuals and communities facing rapid societal changes. His presentation emphasized preventive measures, coping mechanisms, and the role of healthcare providers in supporting patients’ psychological well-being.
The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of JUTH, Dr. Pokop W. Bupwatda, was represented by the Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC), Dr. Njem Josiah Miner, who delivered the vote of thanks on behalf of the hospital management. He commended the organizers and reiterated JUTH’s commitment to holistic patient care.
Prof. Halima Sule and Nurse Umar also expressed their appreciation, urging patients to prioritize their mental health and take advantage of available support systems. The event concluded with a call for stronger collaboration among healthcare professionals to address the growing mental health burden in society.
