The Department of Oncology at Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) commemorated World Cancer Day with a robust awareness campaign aimed at educating patients and the general public on cancer prevention, detection, and treatment.
The event, held at the hospital General Out-patient Department (GOPD) in JUTH, which featured a series of sensitization sessions led by a multidisciplinary team, including doctors, nurses, laboratory scientists, pharmacists, student interns, and nutritionists. These experts provided insightful talks and practical demonstrations on key aspects of cancer, including its causes, symptoms, early detection through self-examination, and available treatment options.
Speaking at the event, the Head of Department, Doctor, Dr. Nandul N. Maurice emphasized the importance of early detection, stating, “Cancer is not a death sentence if detected early. Our goal is to equip people with the right knowledge to take proactive steps in their health.”
Patients and attendees also had the opportunity to engage in one-on-one consultations, ask questions, and receive educational materials on cancer awareness. The campaign aligns with the global theme of World Cancer Day, which encourages action to reduce the burden of the disease through awareness, early detection, and access to treatment.
JUTH’s Oncology Department reaffirmed its commitment to fighting cancer through continuous education, improved healthcare services, and community outreach programs.
